Timebanking is a way for people to help each other, build relationships, be recognised for the help that they give to each other and their community, to build resilience for times of difficulty and to foster a spirit of generosity

We'd love you to join us if you think timebanking is for you.

People get involved with timebanking for all sorts of different reasons:

  • They want to get to know more people in their local community.
  • They want to do something to contribute to their local community.
  • They can get help from others around them.
  • A timebank is a database of local skills and interests that members can use to find help. At the time of the Christchurch earthquakes, the Lyttelton Timebank used their database to locate help for local people.
  • It is a way to recognise the value of the gift that volunteers offer to their communities.
  • Timebanking puts everyone on an even playing field. Everyone’s hour is worth the same.
  • Timebanking may allow people to do more of what they enjoy and less of what they don’t.
  • Some people also join because they are interested in relying less on money. Our financial system with its reliance on interest creates winners and losers, and is really bad for our planet. Timecredits do not attract interest, and they provide a way to trade skills and rely less on our international money systems.
  • Timebanks can make us more aware of the skills that we all have.
